Hey guys, RCA Ed here, how's the summer treating you?
Seems like there's been some dissatisfaction amongst the Daughtry Official diehards over a number of topics as of late, culminating in this here thread, so I wanted to take this opportunity to address some of them...including:
- lack of updates from RCA
- missing tour dates
- lack of airplay for What About Now and The Past
- we are evil
- what's become of RCA Karen?
So let's go...
Lack of updates from RCA
If you think things have been a little quiet in the Daughtry camp since the Bon Jovi tour that's because it has been! Plain and simple: the boys finally took a short break after almost two years of non-stop touring, in order to start working on the next Daughtry album, so there simply wasn't all that much activity to report. But that's about to change, so read on...
Missing tour dates
If there is no news to report, why have tour date announcements gone missing or come late? The answer is much simpler than you might expect. Tour dates often hit the web's gossip mill, or leak locally inside the tour market in question, BEFORE all the T's have been crossed and all the I's dotted. So many parties are involved with booking a show (the venue, the talent buyer, the promoter, the band, the band's management, the label, stage-hands, and so on), and RCA is just one piece of the pie. Unless all parties are agreed and have the time, money and resources to follow through with a tourdate the date cannot formally be announced. Call it playing it safe, but if our site cannot provide reliable information, it cheapens the Daughtry experience for everyone.
Lack of airplay for "What About Now" and "The Past"
Believe it or not, most radio stations were still too busy playing "Feels Like Tonight" to find room to play "What About Now." Station playlists are beyond our control, and a band's own success can actually pose a problem sometimes, when a song is doing so well that stations simply don't feel ready to move onto the next single. This has often been the case for Daughtry and "What About Now" was no exception, but you can expect to hear the song a lot more at radio in the coming weeks and months - simply because radio is suddenly ready to go there. Welcome to our headache!
As for any controversy surrounding Sevendust's "The Past," there are unfortunately certain issues relating to copyrights, royalties, etc., that sometimes affect which versions of songs can be used where, how, and by whom. Suffice to say that such issues involve the BUSINESS part of the 'Music Business' and simply can't be helped - nor are they worth boring you with the lawyerly explanations behind them. Consider them problems that WE here at RCA have to deal with so you - the fans - are spared and can simply enjoy the music.
We are evil
See above, but if you must know, we're not in the business of withholding information about Daughtry, but sharing it! If ever you feel that you've been short-changed by information cropping up elsewhere, believe us that we (a) didn't have the correct and confirmed details ready to be announced, and (b) simply can't control the entire internet.
What's become of RCA Karen?
RCA Karen's been extremely busy with her new job here at the company, and hasn't even had a chance to forward me your questions, as usual, so stop PM'ing her! I know I haven't always been the king of chat here on Daughtry Official, but I swear to you that I do read all your PMs, and try to address them when the questions and issues raised are valid and...well, have an answer. Even better, we just added a new member to the RCA digital team - RCA Josh - who will be your go-to guy here on Daughtry official, and will provide a more active presence while I'm busy coping with those irritating BUSINESS issues - lucky him! Josh will expound on all this below...

Replies for this Forum topic
Good afternoon everyone,
Well this thread has certainly been colorful and I hope I can clarify the gamut of concerns raised here over the past few weeks. Considering the wealth of opinions I'll center on what seemed to have caused the most replies.
What is the purpose of this thread?
This thread or "Drop Box" is just what we call it, I do most of my communication through private messages on the site these days and scan the forums when we can. Considering that the band is in the studio it's been very quiet around the office these days concerning Daughtry, but I'll be happy to share some of the few plans in the works for the Winter in the coming week or so once approved by the higher-ups. So go ahead, you can direct your concerns, complaints and praise here if warranted. Just play nice with one another!
If it hasn't been said before I'm the gatekeeper for info that's distributed by the company, ultimately the webmaster. I'm a technical nerd that handles coding and graphic design for Daughtry's web properties and am looking for red flags. Ed and I not now nor have we ever been in the radio promotion or television departments here, so our guess is only slightly better than yours about the whys and why nots of an album release beyond the web world.
Saturday Night Live
THIS was lost in translation along the way, here's what I've been told: A bid for SNL is like entering a raffle, there is NO money involved in this process. Going onto SNL is like getting airplay on Conan O'Brian, Jay Leno or the Today show. Those programs choose an artist at their sole discretion, and no amount of money, budget or not is going to change that. Paying these shows to promote our artists is comparable to illegal payola practices of the 1950's. Our guess is as good as yours as to why Daughtry wasn't picked, but Deluxe in essence was a re-release and in most cases the SNL staff picks artists pushing two new singles. In the case of Deluxe we catered to Daughtry's core fan base with videos in addition to acoustic, live and covered songs as bonus materials.
Radio
Most albums have two singles, maybe three pushed to radio. This album had 5 singles.
Again, like TV, we don't choose who plays the music we promote, we try our damndest based upon preexisting relationships with radio and tv stations, venues, festivals and press outlets to push what we're selling. If they don't bite, we can't force their hand! In the case of Daughtry, radio has been very good to us and warranted the #1 selling digital album of 2007... now that it's almost 2009 we're very fortunate to have had this unorthodox success, but an album can only garner so much attention for so long!
What the heck is RCA up to?
4th quarter is typically the busiest time of year for music labels, historically sales for any label around the Winter holidays are what keeps the lights on! Though we have to tinker away with our other acts (RCA Music Group is actually three major labels combined) this time of year, we do have a couple campaigns to announce in the coming weeks or so. In both cases we're trying to get the word out sooner than later, but approving the language and level of artist involvement is always a toss up during this busy time of year.
We care! We promise! Just remember to play nice on these forum boards, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you'd like to report site abuse under our terms and conditions (see below) we have a team of people that specifically review flagged posts.
Hope everyone is happy and healthy, wherever you are in this crazy economy and congratulations to any Rays or Phillies fans out there, my beloved Red Sox were beaten to a pulp this past week
Take care!
Josh
Ok,I was going to ask until I read your answer to questions like that! I wait patiently for that info. then. Oh and I'm sorry for your headache! Have a great Thanksgiving to you and yours!!!!!

my opinion was a positive one, and was most definitely unwelcome on this thread. I thank you all for the recommendation that I start a thread for those of us who would like to show our appreciation for the website.I say impartially to ALL, unless someone is being offensive, please allow each other to speak as they choose and with every bit of passion that carries what they believe. To speak passionately about something because one so wholeheartedly believes in it is a beautiful thing. Let's not destroy that, let's encourage it because we ALL wholeheartedly believe in Daughtry.

Am I missing something?

Hey- I know that there are persistant posts about why Daughtry doesn't come to my town or our country, but as yet I don't know that we've been given a decent reason. Can anyone either on behalf of Daughtry or Chris himself give us a reason as to why they have only toured america and not bothered with the rest of the world? I'm a fan and i'd do anything for tickets, within reason, but should we really have to be begging for answers like this. I don't think so. Any info would be greatfully appreciated.
I AM ALSO HAVING PROBLEMS POSTING!!!! AND BTW CAN WE HAVE SOME UPDATED ALBUM SALES AND DOWNLOADS, OR DO I HAVE TO POST THEM!!!!! THANKS!!!!
I'm having the same problem posting new topics and editing the initial posts of any of the old one's I've created!!! It gives separate Choose a Forum options and the last 3 don't work! Please fix, thanks!

It was a relief to know it was not just me yesterday...pms were the only way to stay in touch with guys who are on a similar time-zone so it was crazy but thank God it's fixed, yay

Thank you, Josh, for responding to our questions and concerns. As you are aware, we are eager for Daughtry to be on SNL, and I am just as excited that Chris will appear on CSI: New York. I am interested to know the different demographics for these two shows. I suspect that the CSI audience is older that the SNL audience, so appearing on both shows will broaden their fanbase considerably. We look forward to RCA's efforts on their behalf with the release of their second album. Thank you for communicating that to us.
Also thank you so much for RCA's support of the DAUGHTRY ONE Project. We are thrilled that RCA will join us by promoting the project to tens of thousands of people worldwide. Because of the vast audience you will reach, so many more will donate to ONE, making a difference in honor of Chris' birthday. Together we can do this and show the great and tender hearts of Daughtry fans.

Thanks for responding to some of our concerns. Hopefully this thread can get back to it's original purpose which is to drop off our concerns and suggestions to RCA minus all the lectures.
I've been trying to access the DO forums all day today but when I click on the tab, I keep getting "No forums defined" instead - what does this mean & am I the only one who's getting this? Please heelp!

Just wanted to thank you for giving us the latest and addressing the concerns so many people have hear. I think you really cleared up some things and gave great perspective so I can't thank you enough. I've never had any complaints or problems concerning you or RCA and know there is a lot of work that goes into these things. I think you guys desereve to be treated with respect and you're right that we need to stop fighting with each other and be civil to all fellow fans. Never understood why things have got so heated. Thanks again and keep up the great work. I have learned a few new things hear today and I can't thank you enough for that!!

Hi Josh,
(Just kidding!)
Your detailed post is much appreciated. Very well said!! Especially for a "technical nerd/ Webmaster."
Seriously though, a couple of my best friends are webmasters, and it can be a really tough job. Props to you and Ed for getting up here and communicating with the fans. None of my webmaster friends are called upon to do that. You guys are well spoken with regards to the radio and TV promotion even though you're not involved.
Not a sports fan, just Daughtry and Walt Disney, but sorry about the Red Sox anyway.
Thanks again!
Best wishes,
Deb
Thanks for the update Josh - appreciate that! Can understand what you're saying and the reasons.
As long as you keep us updated as best you can, that's all we can ask!!!
And along with the blogs and messages from the guys - reckon we do well with knowing what's going on!!!
It seems we can't control how the radio or TV stations work, but can let them know just how much so many want to see and hear more of Daughtry!
We need to do all we can to keep up the support that way - and look how it has worked so far!!!! If the media see Daughtry is what so many want - then it has to make a difference to their decisions.
Have been interested in reading what others have said too, but didn't want to get involved, because I don't come here to argue!
I support Daughtry the best way I can, and come along here to do that also, through positive comments and to chat to others with a similar passion - people that have become friends through our common love of Daughtry and being at this site!
We're all here for the same reason, let's unite in our support!
BUT JOSH AND ED - do please continue to keep us in touch with what's going on and why! You can see how much all Daughtry fans care and want to know!!!
Even if you think it's a minor thing!!!!

And I'm still crying about the Sox too.
I don't care what anyone says....I think you are doing a great job and you are keeping us informed as best as you can.....like you said until the higher-ups let you say otherwise...you do what you can in the meantime.
I appreciate reading all of this and I know I'm taking a chance getting slammed for coming here and 'praising' you but so be it! Play nice is a good way to put it. If you can't play nice, you shouldn't be here to play at all. Just wanted to extend a simple thank you for all you do.
Oh and by the way.....my Brewers were out a while ago....so I know how you feel! Better luck next year.

.....freedom of speech in all forms and its broadest sense----has become vital to the very survivial of a civilized humanity." -Walt Disney
Whether voicing negative or positive comments, no one is doing anything wrong simply by speaking. I ask that we are careful not to silence anyone. Everyone deserves to voice their comments, suggestions, feedback, complaints and be heard. Separating voices because of disagreement sends a message that we should be afraid to speak freely. Yes, this is a Drop Box, but it is a Forum as well. Therefore, I say impartially to ALL, unless someone is being offensive, please allow each other to speak as they choose and with every bit of passion that carries what they believe. To speak passionately about something because one so wholeheartedly believes in it is a beautiful thing. Let's not destroy that, let's encourage it because we ALL wholeheartedly believe in Daughtry.
Well, I'm revealing, that not only am I a passionate Daughtry fan, but also a super passionate Walt Disney fan, so I look to him for wisdom and usually share even if people call me a freak. They often do and I welcome that.
In any case, I leave you with another bit of his wisdom.
"You get in, we call them 'gag sessions.' We get in there and toss ideas around. And we throw them in and put ALL THE MINDS TOGETHER and come up with something and say a little prayer and open it and hope it will go." -Walt Disney
Little did he know that what he referred to as 'gag sessions' would someday be known as forums. He would have loved the internet!!!!
Wishing you all magical days!
Ok....back to our beloved Daughtry. Carry on my fellow Daughtry fans......
